Activated alumina is also a good adsorbent for the oxidation of ammonia, hydrogen fluoride and arsenic. It has been widely used as a high-quality fluorine removal agent for high-fluorine drinking water and an arsenic removal agent for the acid industry. Alumina catalysts are mainly used for the isomerization of olefins and the exchange reaction of hydrogen and heavy hydrogen (ie hydrogenation and dehydrogenation), and also as a new catalyst for the recovery of sulfur from sour gas in refinery units. In addition, composite catalysts composed of alumina and various metals and metal oxides are widely used. The activated alumina not only has a high specific surface area, a suitable pore volume and pore diameter, but also has a high mechanical strength and heat resistance, and thus is widely used as a catalyst carrier (spherical or columnar). Catalysts based on activated alumina have Co-Mo/γ-Al2O3 and Ni-W/γ-Al2O3 catalysts for heavy oil and residue hydrodesulfurization, especially for catalysts for automobile exhaust gas treatment. It uses activated alumina as a carrier and a noble metal as a catalyst to rapidly oxidize hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides and other gases.
In 2010, China's activated alumina production capacity was 2.291 million tons, and the global activated alumina production capacity was 5.679 million tons.
