China Aluminum Industry Network 1. Aluminum powder, known for its silvery-white metallic luster, is commonly referred to as aluminum silver or silver powder. Despite the name, it contains no silver—only aluminum. It is widely used in powder coatings, inks, plastic masterbatches, printing, imitation gold paper, cards, films, and textiles. However, it tends to oxidize and turn black when exposed to water-based paints or acidic/alkaline environments. Therefore, it's not recommended for applications that involve exposure to acid, alkali, or rain.
2. Ultra-fine silver powder has a large surface area and quickly forms a protective oxide layer when exposed to air, leading to oxidation and darkening. Proper sealing measures are essential. It is not suitable for applications requiring strong alkali resistance. If needed, consider using silver pearlescent powder instead. Batch-to-batch variations can occur due to differences in production processes and spraying methods, so maintaining consistent production is crucial. A trial run is recommended before mass production to avoid unnecessary losses. Adding 1-2% of ultra-fine silver powder along with 0.6%-1.5% of high-gloss wax AW500B helps achieve a strong metallic finish. The less you add, the bluer the effect. Insufficient amounts may result in dark spots or "flies," making the overall appearance too dark.
3. Floating silver powder naturally rises to the top of the coating, which can lead to slightly lower hardness and oxidation resistance. For better hardness, it’s advisable to add hardeners like AS501 or silver powder hardeners such as POL16 and POL09. Avoid adding high-gloss wax, gold/silver dispersants, or polyethylene wax. Longer mixing times generally yield better results.
4. Floating silver: Smaller particle sizes enhance the metallic feel and hiding power. Too much can cause spit powder or clogging, while too little may lead to black spots, hair-like lines, or stripes. Special-effect silver dispersants like R18 and R01 use SIO2 as a carrier, allowing even dispersion without black spots regardless of the amount. These dispersants also help adjust the color tone based on background color, reducing the need for excessive silver powder. They should be added to the flake, not directly, to avoid particles and white spots. R01 performs better and doesn’t create dry particles when mixed directly.
5. The sheet-like structure of floating aluminum powder can be damaged during grinding or extrusion, causing the color to dull. Dry mixing is typically preferred.
6. Non-floating silver powder is evenly distributed throughout the coating, providing better oxidation and abrasion resistance. It is ideal for outdoor applications due to its superior weather and chemical resistance. However, it requires higher quantities than floating silver and offers a less intense metallic effect. PCRDIS aluminum powder is especially suitable for outdoor use, as it is inorganic and highly resistant to water, UV, and chemicals. Over time, natural exposure to light and humidity may cause oxidation, resulting in a darker, grayish appearance. To prevent this, using a transparent base powder for coverage is recommended. Testing the amount of transparent base powder is important—flash silver can take up to 10% more. Uniform mixing and spraying are key, and coarser particles tend to produce a better flicker effect. Due to differences in shape, density, and charge, separation between the powder and silver may occur. Bonding technology can improve adhesion and performance. Aluminum powder can withstand temperatures up to 600°C without discoloration.
