Experts: It is expected that China's polysilicon can achieve full self-sufficiency within 2 to 3 years

On March 16, Wang Sicheng, a researcher at the Energy Research Institute of the National Development and Reform Commission, said in Shanghai that at present, China still needs about 50% of imports of polysilicon, but this situation will continue to improve. It is expected that polysilicon can be self-sufficient within 2-3 years. He made the above statement at the Shanghai PV Forum organized by SOLARCON China.

Wang Sicheng believes that from the actual demand of the industry and the import data, China's polysilicon industry does not have excess capacity, the current actual production capacity is only nearly 70,000 tons.

Polysilicon achieved self-sufficiency for 2-3 years In 2010, China's polysilicon production capacity was 85,000 tons, and its actual output was 45,000 tons. The import volume was 47,500 tons, and imports accounted for slightly more than 50% of the total demand.

According to statistics from the Energy Development Institute of the National Development and Reform Commission, 97% of China's polysilicon needs to be imported in 2006, and its self-sufficiency rate will increase year after year. The self-sufficiency rate will remain at around 50% in 2009 and 2010.

Wang Sicheng told the China Securities Journal that although the current self-sufficiency ratio is not high, according to the current domestic polysilicon manufacturers' expansion plans and the speed of photovoltaic cell production, it is expected that China's polysilicon can be completely self-sufficient within 2-3 years.

As the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology officially released the industry's long-awaited "access conditions for polysilicon industry" before the Spring Festival this year, the market's repressed polysilicon expansion plans have been released.

In late February, GCL-Poly, China’s largest supplier of polysilicon and wafers, announced plans to invest HK$17.7 billion, which will expand to 65,000 tons on the basis of its current capacity of 21,000 tons of polysilicon in the next two years. China's second largest polysilicon manufacturer, LDK Solar, is also planning a new expansion plan. At the same time, the domestic top 10 manufacturers of polysilicon production capacity after nearly 2 years of technology accumulation and transformation, will reach a gradual increase in productivity, increase market supply.

Most of them are at the low end of the industrial chain. According to the information learned from the Energy Research Institute of the National Development and Reform Commission, there are 20-30 domestically-produced polysilicon manufacturers. However, there are few companies that actually have scale costs and international competitiveness. From the viewpoint of energy consumption and recycling utilization, only There are 3 or 4 companies that have strong competitiveness.

Wang Sicheng said that the majority of domestic polysilicon producers consume more than 180 kWh/kg, silicon tetrachloride cannot be fully recycled, and the unit cost exceeds 50 US$/kg, which is actually not competitive in the market.

It is understood that the current cost of the seven major international polysilicon industry plants are mostly maintained at 20-30 US dollars / kg, the largest domestic Jiangsu energy costs can reach 23 US dollars / kg.

The China Industrial Development Report released by the China Photovoltaic Industry Alliance (CPIA) and the International Semiconductor Equipment Materials Industry Association (SEMI) on the same day showed that by the end of 2010, the manufacturing capacity of crystalline silicon cells in China had reached 21GW, and it will be in 2011. Expand to 30GW. China has occupied half of the world's production capacity and output in the battery and components that have the lowest level of profits in the industry chain.

In addition, in the photovoltaic industry chain, photovoltaic equipment has become a hot industry that has attracted considerable attention in the capital market in the past two years. The brilliant technology of the market last year was based on the core equipment polysilicon ingot furnace used in the production of silicon wafers.

Wang Sicheng stated that at present, the localization rate of photovoltaic equipment has reached 70%, but some core high-end equipment still has a gap with foreign advanced levels, mainly relying on imports. Such as polysilicon production section of the hydrogenation furnace, battery plate automatic welding machine, high purity quartz crucible and so on.
