Uber is building a robotics research lab to develop autonomous vehicles

According to technology blog TechCrunch, people familiar with the matter confirmed that Uber, a taxi service, is building a robotics research lab in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to "start the development of a self-driving taxi team."

Uber has recruited talent from the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, including chief engineering and commercialization experts. Uber published an article on the blog on Monday, outlining the cooperation with Carnegie Mellon University, which confirmed the previous report.

According to sources, Uber has hired more than 50 senior scientists from Carnegie Mellon University and its National Robotics Engineering Center. According to the news, Uber has "mopped up" the talents of the Robotics Research Institute at Carnegie Mellon University.

The news also pointed out that most of Uber's technology comes from a "massive" military spending activity in the past 10 years, which should allow Carnegie Mellon University to benefit millions of dollars in intellectual property licensing fees.

According to sources, Uber will develop core technologies, vehicles and related infrastructure in the Pittsburgh laboratory. Uber has recruited many employees and managed to equip them with software, including hundreds of thousands of dollars in investment in third-party engineering workstations.

The news did not disclose the launch time or target of the Uber self-driving car. Uber has recently raised $4 billion, including a $1.6 billion convertible bond issue launched earlier this month, valued at $41 billion.
