China Particle Collider Exposure: The World's Largest to Date

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European Nuclear Research Center is by far the world's largest particle collider. However, according to foreign media reports, the Institute of High Energy Physics, Beijing, China is preparing an annular particle collider that is twice as large as the LHC.

It is understood that the LHC has a perimeter of 27 kilometers and is capable of generating 14 TeV of collision energy, which is enough to allow scientists to discover the existence of the Higgs boson (God particle). According to reports, the collider that China will build will have a perimeter of 52 kilometers and a collision energy of 70 TeV.

According to the plan, the Chinese collider will only target electrons at the initial stage, and the colliding energy will only have an energy of 240 GeV. At the later stage, the colliders will begin to drive at full power for proton colliding.

It is expected that China’s collider will be put into use in 2028 and cost US$3 billion. It is not clear whether this is a joint project with foreign counterparts.

It is worth mentioning that the United States and Europe have begun preparations for a super particle collider with a perimeter of 100 kilometers and collision energy of 100 TeV.
