Choose LED light source from nine aspects

As the LED market continues to grow rapidly, it's essential for consumers to stay informed and make smart choices. Rather than being swayed by marketing hype, it’s important to understand the key factors that determine the quality and value of LED products. Here are some basic characteristics you should consider when selecting LEDs:

1. Brightness varies among LEDs, and so does the price. High-quality LEDs used in luminaires must meet the safety standard of Class I laser compliance.

2. The anti-static capability of an LED directly affects its durability and lifespan. LEDs with higher static resistance—typically over 700V—are more reliable and tend to be pricier.

3. LEDs with consistent color output, based on the same wavelength, are more expensive. Manufacturers without spectrophotometers struggle to produce pure, uniform colors, making such high-quality LEDs more costly.

4. A leakage current in an LED indicates a potential fault. Since LEDs are unidirectional, any reverse current can cause damage. LEDs with high leakage currents tend to have shorter lifespans and lower prices.

5. The illumination angle of an LED determines how light is distributed. Specialized angles, like full diffusion, require advanced design and thus cost more.

6. The longevity of an LED is primarily determined by its light decay rate. Lower light decay means a longer lifespan, which usually translates to a higher price.

7. The quality of the wafer used in an LED significantly impacts performance. Japanese and American chips are generally more expensive, while those from Taiwan and China are often more affordable.

8. Larger wafers typically offer better performance. The size of the wafer is measured by its side length, and the price tends to increase proportionally with size.

9. The encapsulation material also plays a role. Ordinary LEDs use epoxy resin, but those with UV-resistant and flame-retardant properties are more expensive. For outdoor applications, these features are essential for long-term performance and safety.

In addition to these technical aspects, the reliability of LED lighting systems involves several critical areas: electrical safety, fire safety, environmental protection, mechanical stability, health considerations, and safe usage time. From an electrical safety perspective, all products should comply with international and national standards to ensure user protection.
