German Jena battery and BASF cooperate to develop battery electrolyte

The reporter was informed on February 13 that Germany Jena Battery Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Jena Battery") and BASF are cooperating in the production of a battery electrolyte. The battery technology using the electrolyte is particularly suitable for the fixed storage of renewable energy power and helps to maintain the stability of the traditional transmission network. The Jena battery is based on a redox flow battery (RFB) that uses organic materials. It has successfully developed this technology and is the first to be used in commercial areas worldwide. The two organic electrolytes in the battery are located in different electrolytic cell tanks, and they are separated by a membrane to store current. As a partner, BASF will be responsible for providing one of the electrolytes, which uses an amine as a chemical intermediate, and BASF can produce this chemical intermediate product on a large scale. Jena Battery plans to release the first batch of new redox flow batteries to the market in 2020.

Redox flow batteries store electrical energy in compounds. The two reactive species exist in a dissolved state and circulate in two separate current loops. In the galvanic cell structure, the ion exchange of the two energy storage electrolytes is achieved through the separator. In this process, the dissolved substances will undergo oxidation or reduction reactions; the charging process will absorb electrical energy, and the discharging process will release electrical energy. The storage capacity of the redox flow battery depends on the size of the electrolytic cell; the two electrolytic cells are connected to each other and can be expanded. Therefore, this device is suitable as a large-scale fixed energy storage device with a power of not less than 100 kW and an electric power of not less than 400 kWh. Because the device is highly scalable, its output power can be as high as hundreds of megawatts, and its power can reach the level of gigawatt-hours. For renewable energy generation independent of electricity demand, these characteristics have high practical value. The surplus electricity can be temporarily stored and then sent out when necessary. The new redox flow battery does not contain any flammable or explosive substances; its service life is 10 times that of other batteries, and it can be charged more than 10,000 times.

Disadvantages: (1) poor weatherability, especially in ultraviolet light, aging easily under uv light;(2) generate static electricity;(3) large thermal expansion coefficient and poor dimensional stability;(4) low surface hardness, easy to produce scratches;(5) poor durability and poor environmental stress cracking.

But with the continuous development of blending technology progress, as well as the standard polymer high-performance achievements, some of its insufficient gradually improved, broadens the application field of Standard Plastic, made of plastic in the position in the national economy more and more important.
