Iowa State University develops high temperature resistant flexible solar cells

Researchers at Iowa State University have created a flexible perovskite solar cell with an efficiency of 11.8% and high temperature resistance.

Scientists used layer-by-layer vapor deposition technology to make a thin layer of precursors of lead iodide (PbI2) and cesium bromide (CsBr) into an inorganic mixed halide perovskite solar cell. The research team said: "This vapor deposition technology is consistent, will not leave any contaminants, and has been used in other industries, so it can be scaled up for commercial production."

The researchers pointed out that the use of inorganic compounds (such as cesium) helps to make batteries with higher heat resistance. They claimed that in 72 hours of X-ray diffraction analysis, the battery did not show thermal degradation even at 200 degrees Celsius.

According to scientists, the battery has significant thermal stability and a band gap of 1.87 electron volts (eV). They further explained that the combination of these two characteristics makes the PV device an ideal choice for tandem junction cell applications. The tandem junction cell is used in real life environments where the solar radiation is high and the ambient temperature in summer exceeds 55 ° C. Silicon The battery module is used in a real environment with a temperature close to 86 °.

"This study proves that inorganic perovskite materials and solar cells have higher thermal stability at higher temperatures and longer times than reported elsewhere," the researchers published in a paper published in ACS Applied Energy Materials. "Thermal stability, efficiency, vapor deposition of inorganic perovskite solar cells."
