Michigan University of Technology develops a 3D printed polymer granulation chopper

HC Plastics News:

There is a new breakthrough in the field of 3D printing! A few days ago, researchers at the Michigan University of Technology developed a 3D printed polymer granulation chopper. The shredder cuts the 3D printed wire into pellets for a Fused Particle Fabrication (FGF) 3D printer and can be extruded again into a new reel wire for a standard fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printer.

Anyone familiar with FGF knows that a major feature of FGF is the low cost of raw materials because it uses much less granular plastic than reel wire. The researchers pointed out in the paper that "the price increase of commercial wire exceeds the basic commercial polymer, but the cost of commercial wire is 5 to 10 times that of granular plastic raw material." In view of this, the researchers invented the special conversion of reel wire (the one with a large mark) into particles, so that the granular plastic can be purchased directly at a cheaper price.

The shredder is distinguished by the fact that it is economical and convenient to produce custom mixed polymers on a small scale. Since most parts are 3D printed, the raw material for the shredder is only $185. This also means that any manufacturer of wire rod extruders can make their own hybrid wire using reel wire. While most polymeric materials can be purchased in pellet form, a chopper builder can pellet a particular blended wire and then mix with other specific or original polymers.

The researchers said that the particle size can be controlled by adjusting the RPMs of the engine, and that two or more wires can be pelletized at the same time, which is very helpful in setting a specific particle mixing ratio. The shredder is equipped with two engines and produces 1KG per hour. The researchers tested several plastic materials, including PLA, ABS, coffee-filled PLA, PP, PETg and NinjaFlex, and due to their flexibility, only Ninja Flex did not work.

During the first extrusion cycle, the mechanical properties of the thermoplastic were reduced by 10%, so the plastic could only be cycled several times, although the addition of some of the original particulates to the mixture helped to maintain mechanical properties. The roughly chopped recycled plastic can also be made into granules after being extruded into a wire, and then the quality of the wire can be improved by re-extrusion. Researchers hope the technology can be used to incorporate more waste wood into biopolymer composites.
