In a major breakthrough for biotechnology, Ningbo Ubiquitin Biotech Co., Ltd. has successfully developed a unique "Pasteur" yeast strain that is now entering the pilot production stage. This microscopic organism, measuring just 1 to 2 microns in size, is only visible under a 400x microscope, marking a significant achievement in breaking the long-standing technological dominance of Western countries in this field.
The project is led by President of the company and Dr. Zhu Hui, a prominent scientist who has been passionate about enzymes since his early days as a graduate student over a decade ago. In 2023, as part of Zhejiang Province's "Thousand People Project," Dr. Zhu moved to Zhangzhou to establish "Pure Peptide," a state-of-the-art laboratory and pilot facility. He now leads a team of more than 20 researchers dedicated to pushing the boundaries of yeast-based biotechnology.
"In order to pursue scientific innovation, one must be willing to endure solitude and hardship," Dr. Zhu shared in an interview. His team works around the clock, often staying up late at night to monitor cell growth and test enzyme activity. Their research involved isolating heat-resistant microorganisms from deep-sea vents, using advanced chip technology to screen them, recombining chromosomes, and cloning genes from individual yeast cells. Through sophisticated fermentation techniques, they successfully extracted a novel catalytic enzyme with high biological activity.
This groundbreaking enzyme, produced via recombinant yeast technology, has a wide range of applications, including medical diagnostics, health supplements, food baking, tea processing, papermaking, construction materials, and environmental oil degradation. For instance, a specific oxidase currently under development can fetch up to $2,000 per kilogram. With the domestic demand for biological enzymes reaching approximately 10 billion yuan annually, the potential market is vast.
"We are currently seeking venture capital funding and plan to begin mass production in the second half of the year," said Dr. Zhu confidently. "We anticipate the output value to exceed 100 million yuan."
