Russia's coal mining volume is expected to increase by 3.1% this year

According to the latest forecast data released by the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia, this year Russia's coal mining volume will reach 327 million tons, an increase of 3.1% over the previous year; exports are expected to be 113.4 million tons, which is 2.1% lower than last year.

The Ministry of Economic Development believes that Russia's coal mining volume this year will be slightly lower than the 328.6 million tons before the financial crisis. This year, the demand for coal in Russia is about 232.3 million tons, an increase of 8.6% over the previous year. The demand for coal for power generation is 140 million tons, an increase of 8.7% over the previous year.

The Ministry of Economic Development expects that Russia's coal mining volume in 2015 will reach 344 million tons, an increase of 8.5% over 2010; export volume is expected to be 121 million tons, an increase of 4.5% from 2010.

The Ministry of Economic Development also pointed out that the lack of rail and port capacity, high transportation costs, and inadequate measures to stimulate deep processing of coal are the main factors restricting the development of the Russian coal industry.

In April of this year, the Russian government passed the draft of the long-term development plan for the Russian coal industry by 2030, which outlined the development direction and goals of the Russian coal industry in the next 20 years. The program plans to take comprehensive measures to stabilize the overall situation of the Russian coal industry by 2015, carry out technological transformation and achieve intensive production, increase the efficiency of coal preparation, reduce the accident rate and casualty rate of mining enterprises, and further expand the export potential.
