The application of stone in home decoration

Natural stone has become a prominent element in home decoration, symbolizing the owner's taste and social status. With its unique natural patterns and vibrant colors, it offers interior designers endless creative possibilities. More and more homeowners are now opting for natural stone to elevate the overall design quality of their living spaces. However, it’s important to note that stone is quite particular when it comes to selection, installation, and maintenance. If not handled properly, the true beauty of the stone may never be fully appreciated. The quality of natural stone largely depends on the quality of the raw block and the processing techniques used. High-quality stone should have a consistent color, minimal variation, and no visible imperfections such as sudden color changes or dull spots. After processing, any hidden flaws can affect the final appearance. Therefore, the surface pattern and color are key indicators of the stone's quality. Poorly processed stones may show warping, dents, stains, missing corners, cracks, or color lines—none of which are acceptable for top-grade materials. When selecting granite or marble, there are several options available at different price points. For instance, standard 600mm x 600mm slabs priced below 100 yuan per square meter include Anxihong, Luoyuanhong, Quanzhou White, Pearl Flower, Five Lotus, Zhonghua, Haitang White, Xidonghong, Xiamen Red, and Yongan Red. Between 100 and 200 yuan per square meter, you’ll find Hui’an Red, Anxi Red, Cherry Blossom Red, Crystal White Jade, Pearl Red, Shidao Red, Sesame White, Maple Red, Big White Flower, Sambo Red, Rich Red, Guilin Red, Wood Grain Stone, Crystal Ink Jade, Water Peach Red, Cream Cream, Night Star Snow Gray, Xiamen White, Peach Red, White Jade, Black and White Flower, Jinan Green, General Red, and Pomegranate Red. High-quality natural stone should be well-shaped, with a smooth and bright surface. It should feel even and not rough to the touch. When using stone for flooring, avoid dark and dull colors, as they can make the space feel cramped and gloomy. Instead, opt for lighter-colored stones to create a warm, inviting atmosphere and visually expand the area. In terms of material selection, it's best to go for granite or marble that is wear-resistant, acid-resistant, and alkali-resistant. Light-colored granite, which is widely produced, tends to be more affordable and suitable for middle-income households. This also allows for easy replacement of damaged pieces. For flooring, granite slabs of 8 to 12 mm thickness are recommended to ensure durability and proper load-bearing capacity. For kitchen countertops, choose 25mm thick slabs, preferably granite. Granite is known for its durability and resistance to acidic and alkaline environments, making it ideal for kitchens. Additionally, darker-colored stones like green, blue, or red marbles are better suited for countertops due to their stain resistance. Stones with large, bold patterns tend to offer a more striking decorative effect. When laying stone tiles, it's essential to plan the layout carefully. Since each piece of stone has unique patterns and colors, it’s important to arrange them in a way that creates a harmonious and balanced look. Once the layout is determined, each tile should be numbered so it can be placed in the correct position during installation. Avoid using liquid markers on the stone surface, as they can seep into the stone and leave permanent stains. During installation, apply a layer of clear cement slurry first, then use a 1:2.5 cement mortar mix as the base layer. Make sure the base is level and compacted properly before placing the stone. The cement mortar layer should be at least 20mm thick. Avoid walking or placing heavy objects on the newly installed stone for at least 8 hours to prevent issues like hollowing or unevenness. Also, if the imported stone has a plastic mesh on the back, it must be removed before installation.
