At the atomic scale, friction is caused by atoms that are fixed together, and these atoms cannot move with each other. To overcome this effect, the Argonne National Laboratory uses three key materials: nanodiamond particles, diamond-like carbon surfaces and graphene sheets.
The researchers found that graphene sheets and nanodiamond particles reacted when the diamond-like carbon surfaces were in contact with each other. Graphene revolves around the diamond particles to form a tiny ball-like structure, which the worker calls a nano-axis. These nano-axes can change direction by themselves during the sliding process, thus avoiding the two surfaces being consolidated.
The ultra-lubricity combination brought by the research team has unlimited prospects, but the experiment also found that the diamond/graphene combination can only show super lubricity in a dry environment, but not in a humid environment. Super lubricity. Using an automated calculation program, the researchers found that the presence of a water layer prevented the formation of nano-axes, causing greater friction.
Research institute Sanket Deshmukh said that most mechanical systems are expected to achieve zero friction, but this has always been a very difficult problem.
