Research on karst-covered karst groundwater and karst carbon sinks in southwest China

There are many manifestations of global warming, of which glacier retreat is one of the important manifestations. In the glacier retreat process, along with the release of a large number of glacial meltwater, the water-rock-gas interaction between the groundwater entering the liquid water cycle and the underlying carbonate base rock will generate stimulated karst carbon sinks.

The total area of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is 2.5 million km2, accounting for about one-fourth of China's land area. Not only is the glaciers widely distributed on the plateau, but also the area of carbonate rocks is very considerable. The glacial-covered karst groundwaters of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau are evaluated under conditions of climate warming. The amount of karst carbon sink that is triggered by the system is of great significance.

The Yulong Xueshan Glacier Karst Area in Yunnan is located on the southeast edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and is the southernmost oceanic glaciers in the Eurasian continent. There were 19 glaciers in the 1957, covering a total area of 11.6 km2, compared with 13 in 2009 (4.42 km2 in area). ), Glacier retreat is very significant. To this end, the karst carbon cycle research team led by Liu Zaihua, a researcher at the State Key Laboratory of Environmental Geochemistry at the Institute of Geochemistry at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, based on the hydrogeological investigation of Yulong Snow Mountain, melts and snows the glacier between 2011 and 2014. Water, surrounding springs, and rainwater in Lijiang Bazi District carried out systematic monitoring studies on water chemistry and CHO stable isotopes. The results showed that: (1) The rate of karst development in the Yulong Snow Mountain area was slower than that of the Jinsha River, lacking large-scale karst pipelines and containing water The layer belongs to the diffusion flow system; (2) Yulong Snow Mountain aquifer has multiple discharge areas, among which the Jinsha River is the karst erosion reference plane; (3) the proportion of glacial meltwater in the karst aquifer groundwater is 29%; (4) The karst carbon flux of the system is 26.67±3.44t-CO2 km-2a-1.

These research results provide a valuable methodological basis for the evaluation of water resources formation and karst carbon sinks in the similar karst regions of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau under global warming conditions.

The results were published in the Journal of Hydrology, the International Journal of Hydrology.
