Waterproofing is an essential aspect of home maintenance, and choosing the right waterproof coating is the first step toward effective protection. However, with a wide range of products available on the market, terms like "polymer," "single component," "water-based," and "acrylate" can be confusing for many consumers. To help you make an informed decision, we visited a B&Q store and spoke with experts to explain the different types of waterproof coatings, their advantages, and how to choose the best one for your home.
There are four main categories of waterproof coatings currently available in the market:
1. **Hard Mortar (Rigid Mortar)**
This type of coating is made by mixing emulsion with mortar in a 1:4 ratio. It doesn’t require additional treatment after application and can be tiled directly. Once cured, it forms cement-like lumps, offering excellent water resistance. However, its high hardness makes it prone to cracking if the base layer moves or cracks. It’s typically used for back surfaces. Price ranges from 200 to 300 yuan per barrel (18 kg), covering about 10–13 square meters.
2. **Flexible Mortar**
Flexible mortars have a 5:4 ratio of emulsion to mortar, giving them elasticity that allows them to withstand minor deformations without losing their waterproofing properties. They are ideal for walls and floors but not recommended for ceilings. If applied improperly, they can lead to water seepage. A standard flexible mortar costs between 300–500 yuan per barrel. There's also a high-end version called silica gel waterproof coating, which offers better flexibility but is more expensive, around 600 yuan per barrel.
3. **Acrylate Coating**
This is a pure liquid, water-based product that can be applied directly. It easily bonds with the surface, forming a strong, durable waterproof layer. After application, it needs to be treated with sanding or brushing to improve adhesion before tiling. Acrylates are ideal for areas that are frequently exposed to water. The price is similar to flexible mortars, ranging from 300–500 yuan per barrel.
4. **One-Component Polyurethane**
Known for its high elasticity—over 300% stretch—this coating is very thick, usually applied at 3 mm, and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. It resists cracking even when the substrate moves. However, it has a strong odor, and some brands may not meet environmental standards. It requires a scraper for application and post-treatment for tiling. The cost is approximately 500 yuan per barrel.
The drying time of these coatings depends on weather conditions, but the final waterproof effect remains unaffected. Mortar coatings dry in about 24 hours, while acrylates and polyurethanes take 24–48 hours. One key difference is that mortars are two-component systems, meaning they require mixing, while acrylates and polyurethanes are single-component and ready to use.
Before applying any waterproof coating, it’s important to properly prepare the base layer. A smooth, clean, and dust-free surface ensures better adhesion and performance. Any unevenness can increase paint consumption and reduce effectiveness.
When purchasing waterproof coatings, don’t rely solely on brand names or marketing claims. Look for clear labeling such as “universal†or “flexible.†Pay attention to the emulsion-to-mortar ratio, and compare prices. If two products have the same volume but vastly different prices, it might indicate a quality issue.
Many products are labeled as “kitchen and toilet†specific, but in reality, most indoor waterproof coatings can be used in those areas. To avoid counterfeit products, it’s advisable to buy from reputable stores like B&Q rather than relying on contractors or decoration companies.
Finally, consider shopping at building material supermarkets multiple times to get the best deals. Some construction teams offer rebates, so it’s wise to do your own research and avoid handing over purchase decisions entirely to others.
