Hydropower has been an important source of energy for centuries, with early technologies such as waterwheels and water mills being used to harness the power of flowing water. In the 20th century, the development of hydroelectric power stations using turbines became more widespread due to their numerous benefits. These include low operational costs, no direct pollution, and the ability to generate electricity continuously as long as there is a consistent water supply. However, building large hydropower projects requires significant initial investment and can take many years to complete. Additionally, the construction of dams and reservoirs often disrupts local ecosystems and can affect geological stability. Despite these challenges, hydropower remains a key renewable energy source globally. China, in particular, has vast hydropower potential, estimated at around 680 gigawatts, making it the country with the largest reserves in the world. There is still considerable room for further development and efficient utilization of this clean energy resource.
