New National Standard "General Technical Conditions for Redwood Furniture" Implemented on August 1st

On August 1st this year, the new national standard "General Technical Conditions for Redwood Furniture" will be implemented. Compared with the Hongmu National Standard, which was first formulated in 2000, this version of the national standard appears more detailed and clear.

People in the industry believe that every time mahogany standards, whether national standards or industry standards are formulated or revised, are the result of continuous improvement in the face of new changes in the industry and the market, and also the development needs of the industry itself. Each small step now may be a big step forward in promoting the continuous improvement of the entire industry.

The introduction of new standards in “chaos” will prompt the market to regulate the chaos in the mahogany market. The introduction of the new national standard may be a “strengthening agent” to make it more standardized.

“The mahogany market has always been a piece of fat. The water is deep here.” The person in charge of Beijing Dongfang Shenlong Redwood Furniture Co., Ltd., who has been engaged in the mahogany business for more than ten years in Beijing, talked about mahogany and looked mysterious and helpless. How deep is the market of mahogany in the end, even if it took so many years, this person in charge also frankly, more and more do not understand. Compared with the past, there are many ebony, red sandalwood, green sandalwood and purple ebony on the market. It is not clear what wood is in the end.

Redwood, as a kind of furniture raw material, is not the furniture of a specific tree species, but it is the collective name for rare hardwood furniture since the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It belongs to China only within the scope of its definition. At the beginning of the founding of the People's Republic of China, following the definition of redwood in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, China began to have an initial impression of mahogany.

In recent years, the value of mahogany furniture has skyrocketed. A set of ordinary hardwood tables and chairs, however, a few thousand dollars, while a set of redwood rosewood chair market price is as high as more than 100,000 yuan. If it is currently the most rare Hainan pear on the market, it is based on pounds, up to 10,000 yuan. The huge price gap, so many businesses are trying to climb the high branches of mahogany.

According to industry sources, many furniture manufacturers now mix ordinary wood with real mahogany, and use real red wood skin. The proportion of ordinary wood materials is about 70%, and some even as high as 80%. And only 30% of real rosewood, but only up to 40%. Although it was not real material, it was transformed into a 100% mahogany furniture on the market.

“Like our small and medium-sized mahogany furniture manufacturers, the days are getting worse. There are too many things on the market. The average mahogany furniture consumer can’t afford to buy anything. You don’t falsify, others just fake. Anyway, ordinary consumers can not identify the true and false products at the same time.” When reporters visited Jimei Dinghui Temple in Beijing, many mahogany furniture merchants expressed this.

All this may change with the new standard "General technical conditions for mahogany furniture" enforced by the state on August 1.

“This standard is the first time in China and abroad that China's traditional hardwood furniture standards have been established, including mahogany.” Jiang Hengfu, secretary-general of the China Furniture Federation’s Traditional Furniture Professional Committee, said in an interview with this reporter: “It is used to regulate the entire traditional hardwood industry. As a mandatory standard, its implementation will increase the standardization of industries and enterprises, and it will also play an active role in safeguarding the interests of enterprises and protecting the rights and interests of consumers as well as promoting the sound development of mahogany furniture industry. ”

It is understood that this new version of the national standard mainly includes 10 items including the scope, terminology and definitions, requirements and quality of mahogany furniture. The standard “defines and regulates the definition of mahogany furniture for the first time and stipulates the name and identification of mahogany furniture with the name of the species that the product mainly uses.” The standard also clearly stipulates that each piece of mahogany furniture must be equipped with a "Muslim-wood furniture product quality express card", the production company must specify on the express card the furniture product implementation standards, product technology classification, product quality grade, product application scope, Product main materials, product finishing and decoration process and Other information.

In addition, compared with the 2000 version of the Redwood National Standard, the "General Technical Conditions for Redwood Furniture" not only has a uniform specification requirement for product labels, but also supplements product contracts and more clearly covers the contents covered by the product use instructions. The new national standard will also require all sellers to provide after-sales services related to product warranty, product return, out-of-warranty conditions, and product warranty conditions after the sale. At the same time, the biggest difference in the new national standard is that, if access to judicial authentication, consumers and manufacturers must provide product manuals, product quality assurance cards, product certification.

“This standard actually plays an important role in the specification of mahogany furniture production and technology,” said Yin Yafang, secretary general of the Redwood Branch of the China Forest Product Industry Association. "Moreover, it clearly puts forward provisions for after-sales aspects of defective products. This has certain significance for further regulating and promoting the development of the industry."

Whether the resources are limited or whether to increase the scope of tree species timbering has become a focus in the new national standard of the “General Technical Conditions for Redwood Furniture” to be implemented, which has aroused people’s concern. This version of the new national standard differs from the previous industry standards in restricting tree species and promotes development. And the use of new mahogany wood, and provisions for the production of wood before testing.

It is understood that in recent years, due to Africa, Southeast Asia and other regions have tightened the export of valuable timber such as mahogany, many furniture manufacturers began to compete to purchase sources, making redwood become more tight, some experts pointed out that when the traditional old red wood can not meet the production, The new mahogany variety is bound to emerge. This is also doomed to the Redwood standard will no longer rigidly adhere to the traditional 5 genera and 8 classes and 33 species. Lin Tianhong (Fujian) Furniture Co., Ltd. Planning Manager Bai Yun also said in an interview: To ensure the normal production of furniture, even Tianhong company in the procurement of mahogany raw materials for long-term investment of 3-4 billion in funds; taking into account the long growth cycle of mahogany and can not The characteristics of regeneration, as early as the company's initial establishment, even Tianhong Li, chairman of the board has long been planning, as long as the wood itself has a high hardness, high density, high oil content and good wear resistance, will be considered for inclusion in the future development of the scope of use. Up till now, Liantianhong has discovered more than 10 kinds of new species with similar wood quality and mahogany wood properties on a global scale. These new species may be introduced in modern fashion furniture.

In the new edition of "General Technical Conditions for Redwood Furniture," has there been any proposal to "expand the scope of tree species" and use new materials? In response, Jiang Hengfu said: "As a basic standard, the standard does not define the tree species of rosewood timber, and there is no such thing as expanding the scope of timber species."

Yin Yafang believes that many companies want to stabilize the content of the existing national standard and do not want to expand the scale. Regardless of any changes in the new standards, they should still follow the provisions of the current national standard. Conflicts should not occur. Otherwise, it may not be conducive to the further implementation and operation of law enforcement and quality inspection agencies. He pointed out that tree species that do not belong to redwood may not be good. Enterprises can expand their product lines, but they should explicitly state the trees that do not belong to the existing national standard. This does not prevent the sustainable development of the company.

Yang Jiaxuan, a researcher in the timber industry of the Chinese Academy of Forestry and the first drafter of "China Redwood Standards" mentioned in an interview that it is only a matter of time before new trees are developed and used. The sustainability of mahogany furniture development determines the sustainability of their selection. Sex, but based on the current market is not sound, easily increase the new tree species, not only will increase the country's difficulty in the detection and identification of tree species, but also make consumers feel confused, will lead to a more chaotic market order. The expansion of tree species must be judged from scientific data, and should not be rushed.
