Optical material APEL

APEL is a cycloolefin copolymer (COC) developed by Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. using Ziegler polymerization technology. This cycloolefin copolymerized backbone has a bulky aliphatic ring structure, APEL is amorphous, and has a high glass transition temperature. Therefore, APEL combines the properties of both polyolefins and amorphous plastics, making it unique. APEL offers excellent optical properties and hermeticity, which is unmatched by other resins. APEL is a new material that provides some of the outstanding properties necessary for transparent polymers.

Optical properties: APEL is amorphous and therefore has excellent optical properties. APEL is colorless and transparent, with a light transmittance of 91%, a haze of 4%, and a low birefringence, with a complex refractive index of less than 20 nm, almost the same chemical resistance as PMMA: APEL has good Chemical resistance, excellent resistance to water vapor, acids, alkalis and polar solvents.

Rigidity at high temperatures: The APEL's zigzag modulus is minimally affected by temperature, and high stiffness is still maintained at high temperatures.
