A group from Rice University has also launched a design product with this type of functionality. They have added a small device called PediPowe to the shoes, which harvests energy by hitting the ground with the heel (when walking).
This research team is a rice professional student. The R&D design product is in response to the challenge posed by Cameron International: to create equipment that harvests energy during human activities. After studying the distribution of foot force in each footstep, the students focused their attention on the heels of humans. The reason is that in addition to running, the heel is the first place that comes into contact with the ground and contributes the most.
The current installation of the shoe from the picture is the PediPower prototype. It has a special "arm" around the heel of the shoe. A similar lever comes into contact with the ground for the first time as it steps down (steps on the ground). The "arm" of the small device is accompanied by a gearbox. With each foot movement, the motor mounted on the side of the shoe is slightly rotated, and the power of the motor is transmitted to the battery through the wire of the voltage regulator. PediPower averaged an energy gain of 400 milliwatts after the bench test, while the actual walking gain was slightly lower. The team is currently working to maximize the potential of this device, trying to make the forefoot and heel also work.
Because of the bulkiness and bulkiness of PediPower's shoes, it is not suitable for everyday wear. The research team said that later this year, another research team student will take over the project, and the prototype is expected to reduce and increase power output.
