The development of condensation technology for polybasic acids and polyols dates back to the mid-19th century, marking a significant milestone in polymer chemistry. This process laid the foundation for future advancements in resin production.

In 1921, General Electric Company conducted extensive research on the reaction between glycerol and phthalic anhydride. Their findings revealed that substituting the phthalic anhydride group with a monobasic acid could significantly improve the flexibility and solubility of the resulting product, making it more versatile for industrial applications.

By 1927, Kienle of General Electric Company introduced phthalic acid-glycerides of unsaturated fatty acids, which marked the first practical use of alkyd resins in coatings. The term "alkyd" was coined based on the synthesis of alcohols and acids, reflecting the chemical nature of these polymers.

China's journey with alkyd resins began in 1947–1948 when Mr. Chen Tiaojun from Yongming Paint Factory started producing alkyd resin, leading to the launch of the famous "Sanbao Paint" brand. This innovation played a key role in the growth of China’s paint and coating industry.

Since then, alkyd resins have continued to evolve, finding widespread use in paints, varnishes, and other industrial coatings due to their durability, adhesion, and cost-effectiveness. Today, they remain an important part of the global materials science landscape, with ongoing research aimed at improving their environmental performance and versatility.
