Reasons for the formation of hard chrome plated pinholes in the mold The reason for the hard chrome plated pinholes in the die is that the pinholes are tiny holes from the surface of the coating to the underlying cover or base metal. It is mostly caused by the gas (hydrogen) staying on the surface of the plated part. Pinholes may also be caused by pits on the base metal. Therefore, the cause of pinholes is more complicated.
(1) The metallographic structure of the base material is not uniform or the internal stress is not sufficiently eliminated. These parts are not plated with chromium when the mold is plated, and pinholes are formed. Such pinholes have a cracked coating and the distribution of pinholes is often irregular.
(2) The oil stain on the surface of the plated part is not completely cleaned. The place where there is oil on the plating is not conductive or the conductivity is poor. At these parts, the gas easily stays and pinholes are generated. The pinholes formed by this factor are locally dense and irregular.
(3) There is deep rust on the plated parts before mold plating, especially in summer, the climate is humid, and the plated parts are easy to rust. When the rusted plated parts are plated, the rust is not conductive, resulting in pinholes. .
(4) The high content of sulfate in the plating solution causes the content of trivalent chromium to rise rapidly, and the tendency to form basic chromate on the surface of the cathode increases, resulting in deterioration of the quality of the plating layer, thereby forming pinholes.
(5) It is easy to analyze hydrogen when the surface is rough or scratched. After hydrogen is deposited on the cathode, it often adheres to the surface of the electrode in the form of bubbles, which causes the insulation to be so that the metal ions cannot be discharged in the place where the hydrogen bubbles adhere, but can only be discharged around the bubbles. If hydrogen bubbles are always trapped in one place during the plating process, pinholes are formed in the plating.
(6) The particulate impurities and iron impurities in the plating solution are excessive, and the suspended matter adheres to the inner wall of the plating member; or the plating liquid has high oil content, large viscosity, poor fluidity, gas is not easily escaped, and pinholes are easily generated.
