On May 26, the Korean Agency for the Promotion of Agriculture reported the development of a new technology for the production of vegetable fats in plant leaves. In the past, plant fats were produced and extracted only in seeds. This technique does not affect the growth of plants and the conditions under which the seeds are harvested, so that fat is produced in plant leaves.
The main content of this technology is the combination of transcription factors that induce seed formation and regulatory factors that occur only when the leaves age, allowing fat to be stored in aging leaves. The amount of fat stored in the leaves using this technique can be increased by a factor of 15 compared to normal, equivalent to 1.5% of the dry leaf weight. Seeds that normally produce vegetable oils produce dry fats of 10-30% fat.
The technology was patented last May (Patent No. 10-2014-0663649), and the relevant paper was published in the Plant Biotechnology Journal last March.
