First, transportation
When moving die cutters, it's crucial to use strong, appropriately sized boxes. Each box should only contain one die cutter to prevent collisions. The die cutter should be wrapped in foam plastic to protect its surface. Wooden blocks with holes should be placed at both ends of the short shafts to secure the die cutter and prevent shifting during transit. Straps must be used to fasten the box securely, and the word "fragile" should be clearly marked on the outside to ensure careful handling.
Second, storage
Store die cutters in a cool, dry area away from moisture and direct sunlight. To protect the blade, apply a thin layer of engine oil using a nylon brush near the edge. Always use the original packaging provided by the manufacturer to avoid any contact between the blades and other objects inside the box. Wrapping the die cutter in foam plastic adds an extra layer of protection. Make sure the support blocks in the box are placed under the short shafts, not on the blade itself, to maintain stability without causing damage.
Third, lifting and handling
During workshop operations, always cover the die cutter with a cloth to protect the blade from accidental scratches or impacts. When installing other components, ensure they are securely fastened to avoid falling onto the die cutter, which could lead to serious damage.
Fourth, maintenance and usage
When operating the die cutter, apply even pressure to avoid uneven wear. Cover the surface with a protective layer to reduce impact, and make sure small paper scraps are removed after each use. Regularly check the condition of the die cutter’s gears. If worn, replace them promptly. Manufacturers often design the die cutter’s gear to be slightly softer than the anvil roller’s gear, so it wears first, saving costs and avoiding frequent replacement of more complex parts. This principle is similar to the relationship between plate cylinder and impression cylinder gears, where the easier-to-replace part takes the brunt of the wear.
To maintain optimal performance, always use the manufacturer-recommended roller scraping felt and apply a proper amount of lubricant daily. This helps keep the die cutter roll shoulder and the anvil roll clean, forming a thin oil film that enhances the durability of the cutting edge.
Fifth, record-keeping
It’s important to develop a habit of recording key details such as the number of die cuts performed, the return date of the die cutter, the condition of the material being cut, and whether metallic ink was used. These records help predict when the die cutter may need sharpening or replacement, preventing production delays and reducing waste.
