IBM's new solar power generation technology improves efficiency by 2,000 times

This innovative system uses an array of hundreds of photovoltaic chips arranged like an umbrella, adjusting their orientation to maximize sunlight absorption. To prevent overheating, the system is embedded with dense water pipes that cool the chips. The cooled water can then be used as a secondary benefit, providing affordable hot water to nearby residents—offering both electricity and thermal energy from a single unit. Each individual photovoltaic chip generates between 200 to 250 watts of power during peak sunlight hours. A full array consisting of hundreds of these chips can produce a steady 25 kilowatts of electricity. The cost of this new system is approximately $250 per square meter, which is just one-third of the cost of conventional solar panels. Additionally, the electricity produced costs only $0.10 per kilowatt-hour, making it competitive with traditional fossil fuel-based power generation. With such impressive advancements, IBM’s solar technology is poised to revolutionize the renewable energy landscape. It not only enhances efficiency but also offers a more sustainable and cost-effective solution for future energy needs.
