On March 7th, the Wuhan Traffic Management Department released the list of intersections with the most red-light violations in March. Among them, the intersection at Zhongshan Avenue and Minsheng Road topped the ranking. This junction, known for its high volume of traffic, has been a persistent issue for drivers and pedestrians alike.
The top three newly added intersections in March were: Minsheng Road at Zhongshan Avenue (992 violations), Sanyang Road at Jinghan Avenue (877 violations), and the West Exit of the Third Ring Road on Siyu East Road (822 violations). In January, these locations ranked 5th, 6th, and 4th respectively, with 724, 646, and 986 violations recorded.
During a recent on-site visit, it was observed that many red-light violations at the Minsheng Road intersection occurred when drivers turned right into the Minsheng Road lane. Although there is a dedicated right-turn signal, the light is mounted on a pole rather than a cantilever, making it less visible. The area is also mixed with pedestrians and vehicles, which contributes to confusion among drivers.
At the Sanyang Road and Jinghan Avenue intersection, both directions had frequent red-light violations. According to officials, the surveillance equipment was installed last October. Some drivers may still be testing the system, trying to run the lights without getting caught.
Another problematic spot is the west exit of the Third Ring Road on Xuyu Road, where the sidewalk is clear and traffic moves quickly. With fewer pedestrians, many drivers ignore the red light, leading to increased violations.
In early February, this newspaper reported on several high-violation intersections, including the 8th Avenue of Heping Avenue (1484 violations), Baofeng 1st Road (1437 violations), and Qingdao Road along Yanjiang Avenue (1335 violations). These issues were promptly addressed, and the locations have since been removed from the top 10. At the 8th Avenue of Heping Avenue, the number of violations dropped by 33% in March.
In March, the top 10 intersections with the most red-light violations were:
1. Minsheng Road & Zhongshan Avenue – 992
2. Sanyang Road & Jinghan Avenue – 877
3. Third Ring Road (West Exit) & Yudong Road – 822
4. Nanjing Road & Jinghan Avenue – 364
5. Jianghan Road & Xinhua Road – 356
6. Wuzhan Road & Jinghan Road – 330
7. Hans Highway & 10 km Road – 322
8. Jiefang Road & Xinhua Road – 291
9. Yujiahu Road & Huagong Fuzhong Road – 271
10. Jinghan Road & Gongshang Road – 266
These numbers highlight the ongoing challenge of managing traffic safety in Wuhan’s busy urban areas. While some intersections have seen improvements, others continue to pose risks to drivers and pedestrians alike. Local authorities are working to address these issues through better signage, improved enforcement, and public awareness campaigns.
