A group of researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology developed a way to make this scenario a reality. Their technology makes use of electrochromic materials, which can quickly turn the glass from transparent to near black with a little current. This is not the first initiative for people to change the color of windows, but the researchers said that the windows they developed responded quickly and more efficiently.
Other technologies take a few minutes to change the color of the material, and some technologies do not achieve opacity, but new technologies can. Moreover, existing methods require a constant flow of voltage to maintain the opaque state of the window. While MIT's technology only requires current when changing colors, no connection of energy sources is required, and windows can remain nearly black.
To ensure the responsiveness of the window's color conversion, the researchers used a sponge-like material called a metal-organic framework that quickly conducted electrons and ions. The current is used to give the window a negative charge and the positive ions try to counteract it. This will achieve the effect of color change. They also mixed two different chemicals to stain the windows red and green to make a color that is very close to black.
Mircea Dinca, a professor of chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said that this technology is "significant in terms of energy savings" because it reduces air conditioning demand. "When the sun is in the sky, when you just tap the switch, the window gets darker," he added. Like e-link based Kindle readers, he believes this technology will give birth to low-power smart displays. This technology has already been validated in the laboratory. Researchers still need to make real measurement samples to attract investors and place their creations in our homes.
