According to the China Aluminum Industry Network, there are approximately 40,000 different types of fasteners in and out of China, each with various specifications and applications. These components are used in a wide range of environments and conditions, such as industrial profile fittings, connectors, and other parts that work together with the main equipment. These fasteners must meet diverse functional requirements, including resistance to high temperatures, high pressure, low temperatures, shocks, corrosion, heavy loads, alternating stresses, shear forces, and anti-torsion. Given the critical role they play, the failure of fasteners can lead to serious accidents, making it essential to carefully select the materials used in their production.
Many domestic fastener manufacturers face significant customer complaints due to quality issues, and a large portion of these problems stem from substandard materials. As a result, the correct selection of fastener materials has become a growing concern for companies in the industry. With increasing demands for performance and reliability, manufacturers are now paying more attention to material quality and sourcing strategies to avoid costly failures and maintain their reputation in the market.
Regarding the current state and challenges of fastener steel in China, Shen Gong, a material consultant at the Fastener Professional Association under the China Machinery General Components Industry Association, pointed out: "China is a major fastener producer and also one of the world's leading steel producers. However, the development and production of fastener-grade steel started later compared to other countries. The variety and specifications of cold heading steels available in China are limited, which makes it difficult to meet the growing domestic and export demand. In fact, many steel grades currently used in the production of cold heading steel are based on Japanese JIS standards (G3506, G3507, G4105) or American ASTM standards, indicating a reliance on foreign specifications rather than developing a comprehensive domestic standard."
This situation highlights the need for greater investment in research and development of high-performance fastener materials, as well as the establishment of more robust domestic standards to ensure long-term stability and competitiveness in both local and international markets.
