In recent years, incidents caused by substandard cable products have become increasingly common, posing serious threats to public safety and property. The issue of fires resulting from poor-quality cables has drawn significant attention from national quality supervision authorities, prompting calls for the cable industry to "stay clean and be content," take responsibility for users, and ensure product quality through regional random inspections. These efforts have led to severe crackdowns on unscrupulous manufacturers.
Although each inspection reveals that some cable manufacturers produce substandard products, the number is usually small, and the situation often remains "reporting good news but not bad." It's no surprise that local governments tend to protect their own cable producers, as these companies significantly contribute to regional GDP growth. In some cases, unqualified cables even find their way into the market through bribery or other improper means, leaving consumers frustrated and uneasy.
The reason many companies misrepresent their products during spot checks lies in the current market dynamics. The domestic wire and cable market is plagued by chaos, with widespread issues such as counterfeiting, inferior quality, and cost-cutting. During my own visits to the market, I found that some low-priced cables are mostly substandard, yet they still sell well.
This situation stems from the informal rule of "low-cost competition" within the industry. Consumers prefer cheaper options, and many procurement companies are aware that the products may be substandard, yet they still purchase them. The reason is that problems rarely arise immediately after installation. It often takes years before aging or other conditions cause failures, sometimes leading to catastrophic events like fires.
Despite China's wire and cable industry surpassing the United States to become the world's largest manufacturer, with the biggest consumer base and fastest-growing market, the sector still faces urgent challenges in addressing market disorder. If left unchecked, the industry will remain "big but not strong," which is detrimental to long-term development. As a critical supporting industry for national infrastructure, the cable sector plays a vital role in various fields, including urban construction, energy projects, transportation, and more. Though not always visible, cables can determine the success or failure of major projects and must not be overlooked.
During the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan," various sectors in China experienced rapid development. Urbanization accelerated, urban rail systems expanded, new energy projects advanced, and shipbuilding and aviation industries grew. The push for smart grids and UHV (Ultra High Voltage) projects created a massive demand for wire and cable products. According to data, the Chinese wire and cable industry will continue to grow at a faster pace than the overall economy, highlighting its crucial role in the country’s future development.
