Seiko Epson released the "N Series" of 6-axis vertical articulated robots on November 19, 2015. Its carrying weight is 2.5kg and the repeatability is less than 20μm. Sales will begin in May 2016.
The N series features a "folded new arm structure" that is N-shaped and can be moved with the elbow folded. By adopting this structure, the installation space of the new product is reduced by 40% compared with the original product. According to Yoshida Kasumi, Deputy Director of Seiko Epson's Robotics Solutions Division, "The N Series can work within 600mm of the side length required for workers' work."
The use of a folding new arm structure also helps to shorten the working time of the robot. By folding the arm into an N-shape, the elbow does not protrude, reducing interference with the original 6-axis robot. In order to avoid protruding elbows from touching wiring or other structures, it is necessary to make some work-independent actions. In addition, by folding the arm, the top end portion of the robot can be moved along a shorter trajectory. According to the company, "the simulation time reduced the working time by about 30%."
Recently, the hot topic in the field of industrial robots is a collaborative robot that works in the same space as people, but the N series released this time does not consider cooperating with people, and it is necessary to set up a safety barrier or a protective cover. Regarding robots that work with people, Seiko Miyuki, director of the Robot Solutions Division of Seiko Epson, said that “the safety technology is being developedâ€. “It may be because the manpower is not so tight that it is necessary to consider the degree of collaboration between people and robots. The demand for robots is still very small."
Seiko Epson plans to use the N-series on its own production line. In addition, the N series will be exhibited at the "2015 International Robot Exhibition" which opened on December 2nd.
