According to recent media reports, Europe has launched its most ambitious X-ray astronomical telescope project to date, called "Athena." Standing 12 meters tall and weighing 5 tons, this advanced space telescope is set to launch in 2028. Recently, the European Space Agency's Science Program Committee met in Toulouse to finalize the design of this groundbreaking observatory. The project's budget is expected to exceed one billion euros, with European space agencies committed to pushing the boundaries of technology and industrial capabilities. Paul, the head of the Athena Telescope Coordination Group, expressed his excitement about the project, calling it a remarkable achievement, especially given the strong and dedicated team working on it.
The approval process for the "Athena" telescope is still ongoing, with the final design expected to be completed around 2019. However, the concept of a super X-ray telescope has been under development for several years by leading scientists and contractors. As the next-generation space telescope, Athena is expected to play a crucial role in X-ray astronomy. Its significance is comparable to that of the Square Kilometre Array and other major telescopes. Together, these instruments will allow us to observe the universe across multiple wavelengths, providing a more complete picture of cosmic evolution. Compared to previous X-ray telescopes like the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton and NASA's Chandra, Athena's observational power is over 100 times greater.
Athena will use cutting-edge optical technology to study high-energy phenomena in the universe, such as the formation and evolution of black holes, and the interaction between our galaxy and surrounding galaxy clusters. These objects emit intense energy, making them best observed in the X-ray band. To achieve this, scientists are developing advanced silicon optics that expand the telescope’s field of view, allowing precise measurement of X-ray photon energy. This will enable detailed studies of extreme cosmic environments where high-energy radiation dominates.
Although the "Athena" telescope currently faces few technical challenges, one major concern remains: the launch vehicle. The Ariane 5 rocket, which is currently used by Europe, may not be available by 2028. There is also uncertainty about whether the new Ariane 6 rocket will be capable of carrying a 5-ton payload. Additionally, plans are already in motion for a gravitational wave spacecraft to be developed by 2034, aiming to explore the universe through gravitational waves. With these advancements, the future of space exploration looks brighter than ever.
