In recent years, as awareness of the harmful side effects of synthetic chemical drugs has increased, both domestic and international medical communities have begun to focus more on the development of natural plant-based compounds. The need for Chinese herbal medicine additives with minimal side effects, strong therapeutic effects, and nutritional benefits has become increasingly urgent. One such additive, Astragalus membranaceus, is widely used in animal husbandry as a feed supplement.
Astragalus membranaceus is a traditional Chinese herb known for its qi-tonifying properties. It contains various bioactive components, including polysaccharides, alkaloids, amino acids, flavonoids, terpenoids, and trace elements. Among these, Astragalus polysaccharides are particularly noted for their immunomodulatory activity. Modern research has shown that these polysaccharides can enhance immune function, promote cellular metabolism, act as antioxidants, and regulate DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis. Additionally, they possess a range of pharmacological effects, such as anti-inflammatory, hypotensive, and hepatoprotective properties, along with a dual immunomodulatory effect.
The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the impact of Astragalus polysaccharide powder on the performance of sows during the third trimester of pregnancy. The study aimed to provide a practical foundation for the development of Chinese herbal feed additives that could improve sow performance and piglet health.
The trial involved 106 pregnant sows, selected from February 27 to March 22, 2007, provided by Xuchang Yuchang Animal Husbandry Co., Ltd. The test drug, Astragalus polysaccharide powder (also known as quercetin), was supplied by Beijing Shengtaier Biotechnology Co., Ltd. The study took place on a farm in Xuchang County, Henan Province, from January 15, 2007, to May 5, 2007.
The sows were randomly divided into two groups: an experimental group receiving the Astragalus polysaccharide powder in their feed and a control group without any additives. Key performance indicators included litter size, live birth weight, stillbirth rate, mummified rate, deformity rate, and the number of weak piglets.
Data analysis showed that the experimental group had higher litter sizes, better live birth weights, and lower rates of stillbirths, mummies, and deformities compared to the control group. Additionally, piglets from the experimental group had a 2% higher survival rate and an average weight 0.14 kg higher than those in the control group, indicating improved growth performance.
With rising living standards, consumer demand for high-quality pork has increased, prompting researchers to seek safer alternatives to reduce drug residues in livestock. Despite progress, issues like stillbirths and mummified fetuses remain significant challenges in the swine industry. In response, Beijing Shengtaier Biotechnology developed quercetin, a natural herbal compound with no drug resistance or residues, offering effective prevention against reproductive disorders in sows.
Quercetin enhances the immune system by activating immune cells, increasing antibody production, and boosting levels of immunoglobulins and lymphocytes. This not only improves the health of the sows but also strengthens the immunity of piglets through maternal antibodies, reducing mummification and stillbirth rates. As a "new three" veterinary drug, quercetin ensures the safety and quality of pork by eliminating toxic side effects.
In conclusion, the results of this study demonstrated that adding quercetin to the diet of sows significantly improved their health and the survival rate of their piglets. It effectively enhanced sow performance during late pregnancy and offered a promising solution for preventing reproductive disorders in pigs.
