Floating school in Nigeria

Floating school in Nigeria

In response to rising water, flooding and soft land, a floating school will soon appear in Lagos, capital of Nigeria.

This “Makko Floating School” is located in the waters near the Marco Polo waterfront slum in Lagos and was designed and built by the Dutch. The builders used 16 pieces of wood produced in Lagos to build 16 wooden planks. Then they put together a rectangular large plank as the bottom plate, and fixed 256 plastic buckets underneath to provide buoyancy. The long sides of the floor are made of wood to create slopes, forming a triangular column, like the triangular roof of an ordinary building. The entire column is divided into three layers, one for the classroom and the other for the playground and the green area. Floating schools are self-sufficient in energy. The triangular prism slope is covered with solar panels to solve the power problem; the bottom part can collect and store rainwater for flushing toilets.

Floating school can accommodate about 100 students. There is only one primary school in the area. The construction of the new school was warmly welcomed by the local people. The Marcoke Floating School is expected to be completed by the end of this month. If all goes well, this floating home will gradually replace the shack in the slums of Makoko and eventually form the Lagos water community at the end of 2014, becoming a new home for 100,000 slum dwellers.
