By the end of June this year, Beijing has initiated the installation of a new safety monitoring system for elevators and escalators in its rail transit network. A total of over 3,000 "black boxes" will be installed to monitor elevator safety and track the real-time operation of critical components. The Beijing Municipal Bureau of Quality Supervision and the Transportation Commission are currently conducting surveys, with the official launch of the system expected by the end of the year.
On the 26th, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Quality Supervision took an educational approach by visiting Weigongcun Primary School to raise awareness about elevator safety. Staff members demonstrated how to use elevators correctly to fourth-grade students through engaging videos. Li Lianghua, Director of the Special Administrative Division at the bureau, explained that more than 3,000 primary and secondary schools across the city will receive these promotional films to be used in safety education classes.
In addition to the "black box" initiative, the bureau plans to enhance elevator inspections this year. Regular spot checks will be conducted on maintenance sites, and any equipment found to be unsafe or non-compliant may be removed from service. This move aims to ensure public safety and maintain high standards of elevator performance.
Furthermore, penalties will be imposed on elevator maintenance companies that fail to meet inspection deadlines. The maximum fine could reach 300,000 yuan. This year, over 8,000 elevators in older residential areas will undergo random inspections. To support these efforts, the municipal government has allocated over 6 million yuan in special funds to repair and upgrade existing elevators in old residential buildings.
