Contactor common fault

One common issue with contactors is unreliable contact, which can lead to poor performance and potential equipment failure. When the contacts between the stationary and moving parts are not properly connected, the resistance increases, causing excessive heat at the contact surface. This can result in point contact or even complete loss of contact during operation. The main causes of this problem include:

1. Contamination from oil, dust, or foreign particles on the contact surfaces.

2. Oxidation due to long-term use, especially in environments with high humidity or temperature fluctuations.

3. Arc damage caused by repeated switching, leading to surface pitting, burrs, or metal debris accumulation.

4. Mechanical sticking or misalignment in the moving components of the contactor.

To address these issues, several maintenance steps can be taken:

1. Clean the contacts thoroughly using a soft cloth, alcohol, or gasoline if there are oils, dirt, or foreign materials present. This helps restore good electrical conductivity and prevents further degradation.

2. For silver or silver-based alloy contacts, minor oxidation or slight burning may not significantly impact performance. These can be cleaned using alcohol, gasoline, or carbon tetrachloride solutions. If the surface is uneven due to arcing, gently remove any raised areas or burrs with fine sandpaper, but avoid over-sanding, as it can reduce the contact life.

For copper contacts, light burns can be smoothed out with a fine file to eliminate irregularities. However, avoid using abrasive cloths that might leave behind grit, which could interfere with proper contact. In cases of severe damage where the contact surface is significantly worn down, replacement of the contact is necessary.

3. If the moving parts are jammed, disassemble and inspect them for wear or obstruction. Lubricate moving components as needed and ensure smooth operation before reassembling the contactor.

Maintaining proper contact integrity is essential for the safe and efficient operation of contactors. Regular inspection and cleaning can prevent many of these issues and extend the lifespan of the device.
