China's machine tool exports in the world's eighth European market

Abstract At a recent event in Shanghai, Schaefer, the general manager of the German Machine Tool Manufacturers Association (VDW), highlighted that China's machine tool exports have climbed to the eighth position globally, with Europe now playing a significant role as a key export market. He forecasted that China's machine tool consumption would grow by 12% in 2013, reaching approximately $38 billion.
During the "2013 Hannover European Machine Tool Show (EMO)" promotional conference, Schaefer noted that the European market currently represents 24% of China’s total machine tool exports, amounting to around $600 million. This reflects a growing interest from European buyers in Chinese manufacturing equipment. According to available data, the global machine tool market has more than doubled over the past two decades, reaching roughly $86 billion in 2011. Since the turn of the century, annual growth in machine tool consumption has averaged nearly 10%, with Asia driving most of the expansion. In 2011, three-fifths of global machine tool production was directed toward Asian markets. With large-scale infrastructure investments expected to boost China's economy in 2013—particularly in high-speed rail, urban transit, airports, and power grid development—the country's industrial modernization is accelerating. This trend is increasing demand for advanced and efficient manufacturing technologies. Schaefer emphasized that China's machine tool purchases are set to continue rising, with an anticipated 12% increase in 2013, reaching $38.1 billion. This growth is being fueled across almost all user industries, reflecting strong domestic demand. The Hannover European Machine Tool Show (EMO) is one of the most important events in the metalworking industry. EMO 2013 will be held in Hanover, Germany, from September 16 to 21, under the theme of “Smart Production.” The exhibition will bring together manufacturers from around the world to showcase cutting-edge metal processing technologies, products, and services. As per the organizers, Chinese machine tool companies are highly motivated to promote their “Made in China” brand at the event. By November, 32 Chinese firms had already registered for the show, marking a more than doubling of participation compared to the same period last year. This indicates a strong push from Chinese manufacturers to gain international visibility and expand their global footprint.
