Earthmoving machinery classification

Preparation of various types of machinery is essential for construction and mining operations. This includes working machines, earthmoving equipment, excavation tools, leveling devices, compaction systems, and hydraulic earthmoving machinery. These tools are designed to handle different tasks such as digging, moving, grading, and compacting soil or other materials.

Mineral processing machinery is specifically used to extract materials from above or below the surface of the carrier, including soil, coal, silt, and pre-processed geotechnical or ore materials. These materials are then transported into vehicles or placed in stockpiles. The main types of mining machinery include single-bucket excavators and multi-bucket excavators, each suited for different applications based on efficiency and material type.

Scraping and transport machinery are used for surface preparation, pushing, or leveling the carrier's surface. They typically rely on traction for operation. Common types include bulldozers, scrapers, loaders, graders, and earth-moving machines. Depending on their design, these machines can be either tire-based or tracked. Most earthmoving equipment consists of a power unit (often a diesel engine), transmission system, travel mechanism, and working components. While multi-dump excavators operate continuously, most earthmoving machines function in cycles.

The selection of earthmoving machinery depends on the nature of the work, operational requirements, and machine characteristics. Additional factors such as transport distance also play a role. For example, bulldozers are effective for short distances of 30–60 meters, while self-propelled scrapers are ideal for longer distances ranging from 180 to 2000 meters. Loaders and dump trucks are suitable for distances over 300 meters, and graders are best for large-area leveling tasks.

Leveling machines, often equipped with a scraper, are used to smooth out sites or trim the ground after earthmoving operations. Automatic graders are widely used for precision leveling in construction projects.

Compaction machinery uses static pressure, vibration, or impact to increase the density of soil or road layers. This category includes sheep’s foot rollers, smooth drum rollers, tire rollers, vibratory rollers, frog-type compactors, and internal combustion hammers. Each type is selected based on the material and the desired compaction level.

Hydraulic earthmoving machinery utilizes high-speed water jets to break down soil or rock for excavation. The resulting slurry is then transported to designated locations. This system typically involves pumps, water cannons, and suction devices, which allow for efficient excavation, transportation, and filling. Although highly effective, this method consumes a lot of water and has limited application in certain environments.
