More than 60% of sanitation workers are troubled by occupational diseases

In a recent health examination, numerous sanitation workers were found to suffer from various occupational diseases. Among them, 11 members of a cleaning team were diagnosed with conditions such as arthritis, frozen shoulder, and herniated discs, while eight of them had breast hyperplasia. On January 18, Chen Renlian, the general manager of Dalian Wanshuntong Environmental Cleaning Co., Ltd., shared these findings with reporters after receiving the official medical reports. He revealed that on January 10, the company had organized a special health check-up for its 485 sanitation workers. The results showed that over 60% of the workers had occupational illnesses, including rheumatism, heart and lung conditions, and cardiovascular or cerebrovascular diseases. Specifically, 40% suffered from rheumatism, 20% from cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and 11% from cardiopulmonary issues, with less than 40% of the workers reporting full health. According to the medical examiner, the repetitive and physically demanding nature of sanitation work often leads to imbalanced body strain, increasing the risk of varicose veins, arthritis, and other musculoskeletal problems. Approximately 65% of the examined workers showed signs of similar conditions. In addition to physical strain, the constant exposure to dust and exhaust fumes during their daily tasks significantly raises the likelihood of respiratory and heart-related diseases. Workers involved in garbage collection, for instance, are more prone to back injuries due to the lack of proper shock absorption in garbage trucks. Dr. Cheng Chuihua noted that the continuous stress of working on the streets all year round can lead to high blood pressure and increased mental stress, which further contributes to the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Chen Renlian emphasized that the company plans to make regular health check-ups a standard practice for its employees. According to an official from the Municipal Sanitation Department, the health conditions of the sanitation workers highlighted by Wanshuntong’s initiative reflect the broader challenges faced by city sanitation workers. This underscores the urgent need to address occupational health concerns among this essential workforce. Over the past years, the municipal government has invested in modernizing waste management by introducing mechanical sweeping, watering, and high-pressure flushing vehicles, aiming to reduce manual labor and improve working conditions. Moving forward, it is crucial to establish a more comprehensive occupational health protection system for frontline sanitation workers.
