This year, Chinese automaker Chery recently launched the latest eQ1 electric car, because its internal structure of the tailgate is from Saudi Basic Industries Corporation ( SABIC)'s polyolefin material achieves 40% weight reduction!

The implementation of Euro 6 emissions in 2014, as well as the 2020 carbon emissions target and even the 2050 carbon emission target is a hurdle in front of major OEMs.

The inner panel of the all-plastic tailgate uses long glass fiber reinforced PP (LGF+PP), the outer panel and spoiler use PP or TPO, the parts are all formed by injection molding process, and then assembled by using the glue coating process.

Long glass fiber reinforced PP and SMC materials, the stiffness modulus is not too different (depending on the proportion of different glass fiber, the effect will be very different, there are some low-component glass fiber reinforced PP parts are still sensory or "soft" ), but the density is smaller than SMC. Generally, the density of SMC materials for tailgates is about 1.8, while the density of PP+LGF for the same proportion of glass fiber is generally around 1.5, which is about 1.3kg. +LGF material additive is used in a small amount, which has an advantage in VOC detection; the injection molding process is more efficient than the molding process. To sum up, the use of modified plastic as the tailgate material not only has a good weight reduction effect, but also can save production costs.

The history of the material company's research and development of the plastic tailgate

The first model to use this all-plastic plastic tailgate was the Renault New Clio in 2012. The inner panel is LGF-PP, the outer panel is PP, and the spoiler is ABS. At the pre-research stage, Renault set the next drop. A goal that weighs 10% and is easy to recycle. In order to achieve this goal, material supplier Styron (now renamed Trinseo) and Renault worked together for two years, and finally developed a full-plastic tailgate that can be mass-produced. The inner and outer plates and spoilers are made of Trinseo.

In 2013, the tailgate supplier Pieu developed its first all-plastic tailgate, Peugeot's new 308 tailgate, inner panel LGF+PP, outer panel and spoiler PP, and the material supplier was SABIC.

At the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, Nissan unveiled its third-generation X-trail, which is equipped with the all-plastic tailgate developed by Magna.

In 2014, the BMW i3 used the all-plastic tailgate developed by Magna.

From the current situation, it is certain that the plastic tailgate will become more and more popular in the future. SUVs and MPV models, hybrid and electric vehicles all have a lightweight way to reduce fuel consumption, emissions or enhance endurance. Therefore, more and more car companies will try to do this!
