The rise of the furniture and beauty industry

Recently, 50-year-old Sun Zhaolong rode his motorcycle to a community near the 25th block of FAW to "beautify" a tenant's solid wood furniture in Unit 14.

It turned out that the household had moved their furniture multiple times, causing scratches on the lacquer surface and edges of the solid wood dining table, which made it look less attractive. Although returning to the factory for repairs was an option, it would have meant paying for shipping costs. Concerned about the expenses, the furniture salesperson recommended Master Sun, a professional furniture beautician who specializes in repairing damaged furniture.

While working, Sun Zhaolong explained that furniture "beautification" is a complex process. It’s not just about fixing the damage—it's also crucial to maintain the original quality and appearance of the furniture. Therefore, as a furniture beautician, one must have knowledge of paint mixing, color matching, and attention to detail.

Sun Zhaolong carries all his tools in a box, including paints, brushes, and a hairdryer. He first uses 502 glue to fill in the scratches, then carefully sands them with fine sandpaper. After applying several layers of color-matched material, he uses a brow pencil to recreate the natural wood grain and dries it with a hairdryer, effectively hiding the damage.

Previously, Sun Zhaolong ran a furniture production and processing business in Yingkou. He learned about the growing demand for furniture repair services in coastal cities and decided to move to Guangdong for a year to study the craft. After completing his training, he brought his wife and son into the business. Four years ago, the entire family relocated to Changchun and became full-time furniture beauticians. As his children grew older and more skilled, they now work alongside him, making the family a well-established team in the industry. Their monthly income exceeds 30,000 yuan, proving that the trade is both rewarding and sustainable.

"If there's no serious damage, most repairs cost around 50 yuan," Sun Zhaolong said. He believes that compared to buying new furniture, many consumers are now more open to the idea of repairing and restoring their existing pieces. With the increasing awareness of environmental protection and energy-saving lifestyles, people are gradually changing their consumption habits. For instance, 70% to 80% of new furniture owners prefer to fix small damages rather than replace the whole piece. Sun Zhaolong finds great satisfaction in his work, saying, "This industry will definitely take off in the future." He sees a bright future ahead, driven by growing consumer awareness and the value of sustainability.
