Lighting power is an important part of future energy saving

Lighting power is an important part of future energy saving Lighting plays a crucial role in the overall energy consumption of modern society, and its importance is growing rapidly. According to Jiang Bingrong from the Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction Branch of the National Development and Reform Commission, lighting electricity has become a significant portion of China’s total energy use. In 2010, lighting alone accounted for 13% of the country’s total electricity consumption, highlighting its critical impact on national energy strategies. As a result, improving lighting efficiency has become a key focus in China’s efforts to reduce energy consumption and address climate change. In recent years, the development of new lighting technologies and products—both domestically and internationally—has significantly improved energy efficiency. These innovations not only offer better performance but also provide cost-effective solutions for energy conservation. With the rapid advancement of technology, traditional incandescent lamps are gradually being phased out, making way for more efficient alternatives like energy-saving lamps and especially LED lights, which have revolutionized the industry with their long lifespan and low power consumption. Supported by the national initiative to phase out incandescent bulbs and promote energy-efficient lighting projects, the National Energy Conservation Center has conducted extensive research and analysis to identify the most effective lighting solutions. Based on this work, they have compiled ten best practice examples showcasing advanced energy-saving lighting technologies. These include the application of high-power LED stage lighting at the Chang’an Grand Theatre, the use of self-dimming LED lamps in public areas, and the implementation of high-efficiency lighting systems in the Tsinghua Tongfang Zhiwang Building. During the evaluation process, the center focused on the technological advancement and energy-saving potential of each project. This year’s “Best Practice Case for High-efficiency Lighting Power Saving Technology” featured five LED-based cases, making up half of the total. Other cutting-edge technologies, such as ceramic metal halide lamps and high-efficiency lighting fixtures, are also leading the way in energy-saving innovation. These solutions align well with the government’s long-term vision for sustainable lighting and energy management. These case studies serve as valuable references for businesses and individuals looking to adopt efficient lighting technologies. They not only demonstrate real-world applications but also help drive the continuous improvement of lighting energy-saving solutions across the country. By promoting these technologies, China is taking meaningful steps toward a more sustainable and energy-efficient future.
