Lighting plays a crucial role in the future of energy conservation and sustainable development. According to Jiang Bingrong from the Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction Branch of the National Development and Reform Commission, the share of electricity used for lighting in China's total consumption has been steadily increasing. In 2010, lighting alone accounted for about 13% of the country’s overall electricity use, making it a key area for energy-saving initiatives and climate change mitigation efforts.
In recent years, rapid advancements in lighting technology have significantly improved efficiency and performance. From energy-saving lamps to cutting-edge LED solutions, these innovations are not only more environmentally friendly but also more cost-effective in the long run. As a result, traditional incandescent bulbs are being gradually phased out in favor of more sustainable alternatives.
Supported by the national policy of phasing out incandescent lamps and promoting energy-saving lighting projects, the National Energy Conservation Center has conducted extensive research and developed ten best practice examples showcasing efficient lighting technologies. These include the application of high-power LED stage lighting at Chang'an Grand Theatre, the use of self-dimming LED lamps in public areas, and the installation of high-efficiency energy-saving lamps in the Tsinghua Tongfang Zhiwang Building.
During the evaluation process, the center focused on the technological advancement and energy-saving potential of each project. This year’s “Best Practice Case for High-efficiency Lighting Power Saving Technology†featured five LED-based cases, making up half of the total. Other advanced technologies, such as ceramic metal halide lamps and high-efficiency lighting fixtures, are also gaining popularity due to their superior performance and alignment with national energy-saving goals.
These real-world examples serve as valuable references for businesses and individuals looking to adopt energy-efficient lighting solutions.
