The freshly renovated living room didn't stay intact for long, as the walls began peeling, flaking, and chipping almost immediately. Naturally, this was frustrating to experience. However, the root cause of this issue isn't necessarily the quality of the paint job or the craftsmanship, but rather the improper handling of the base layer during construction.
Embrace the Old Base Layer
So, how can we prevent these kinds of issues? First, ensure the wall is solid, completely dry, with a moisture content of less than 10%. Any old layers need to be thoroughly cleaned. Many developers use an 821 putty when delivering new homes. Unfortunately, this type of putty tends to flake and peel easily, so it must be removed entirely and reprocessed. Additionally, apply a primer before reapplying the putty. A primer helps lower the pH of the base wall, strengthens the underlying layer, and improves the adhesion of the topcoat. When selecting a primer, always opt for one from a reputable manufacturer and avoid using glue as a substitute.
Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, is the application of the putty. Prior to painting, you should apply two layers of putty. It's best to choose a water-resistant putty from a well-known brand, as these types of putty offer high whiteness, excellent water resistance, strong bonding power, and won’t peel or flake after drying. Once the wall surface has been properly treated, apply a high-quality latex paint. With this approach, your walls should remain durable and free of problems.
Whether it's labeled as "standard paint," "eco-friendly paint," or "green paint," all coatings must first comply with national standards for hazardous substances. It’s fair to say that paints meeting these standards are safe. While volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in paint can be harmful to humans, the key is the quantity. As long as the VOC levels are within acceptable limits, they shouldn’t pose significant harm to health, and consumers shouldn’t be overly alarmed by the term "toxic."
Picking Paint Wisely
Like any other product, the paint market is filled with varying quality levels. Mr. Anju advises everyone to avoid cutting corners when purchasing paint and always opt for reputable brands to ensure the safety of yourself and your family.
Don't fall for the allure of the word "green" on the packaging. Instead, carefully review the product's quality inspection report, inspect the seams of the metal drum for rust or leaks, and ensure the label on the drum is complete. For imported paints, choose those with Chinese logos and descriptions for ease of understanding.
Paints with excessive harmful substances like VOCs and formaldehyde often have a strong, unpleasant odor that can make people feel unwell. Therefore, if you notice a strong smell while shopping, proceed with caution. It’s also advisable to avoid scented paints, as the additives themselves are typically chemical-based.
Always keep your purchase receipt. If possible, ask the seller to open the paint container for inspection. Poor-quality paint may exhibit severe layering, making it difficult to mix properly. High-quality paint, however, will cling to the stirring stick and spread evenly without dripping excessively. The cleaner the water after rinsing, and the smoother the paint feels in your hand, the better its quality. (Translated by Zhong Jie)
