At 8:00 AM yesterday, a tragic incident occurred at the Phufu Apartment complex near the Hongpu intersection on Deshengdong Road. A large piece of tempered glass fell from the 8th floor, striking and fatally injuring a young worker from Anhui named Xiaozhong, who was 27 years old. The accident took place during the final phase of construction on the fourth stage of the building.
The incident happened while workers were finishing up the installation of glass and railings on Building No. 4. According to a report from Pengyi Police Station, at 8:30 AM, two workers were installing tempered glass on the west balcony of the 8th floor when one of them slipped. A piece of glass measuring about one meter in height and 80 centimeters in width fell from the balcony and landed directly on top of Xiao Zhang, who was working nearby.
A co-worker wearing a blue T-shirt described the moment he saw the accident. “I was with him (Xiao Zhang) going to the side of Building 4 to get some tools. He was behind me, and I suddenly saw him fall down. When I turned around, I saw the glass had shattered on his head. There was blood everywhere, and we realized he wasn’t wearing a safety helmet.â€
After the accident, the workers immediately called 120 for emergency assistance. However, they couldn’t wait for the ambulance to arrive and instead took Xiao Zhang to the nearest Peng Yu Health Center themselves. Unfortunately, the injuries were too severe, and he later died despite medical efforts.
“He was only 27 years old,†said one of the workers, clearly upset. “He’s from Anhui, just like me, and he was still single. It’s really heartbreaking.â€
The chief engineer of the project, Qi, acknowledged that safety protocols had been repeatedly emphasized. “We have always reminded the workers to wear helmets. But many of them say it's too hot and uncomfortable, so they choose not to wear them.â€
This incident has raised serious concerns about workplace safety, especially in high-risk environments like construction sites. As reports continue to emerge, there is growing pressure for stricter enforcement of safety regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
