Human imagination knows no bounds, and now NASA is exploring a bold new concept: harvesting solar energy from space. This ambitious idea could revolutionize how we power our world.
The space agency is currently working on a project known internally as "Screw," which aims to use satellites equipped with solar panels to collect energy in space and beam it back to Earth. The goal is to create a sustainable and efficient energy source that can operate 24/7,ä¸å—天气 or daylight limitations.
According to NASA's long-term vision, the SPS-ALPHA (Solar Power Satellite - Alpha) project will be launched in 2025. This modular satellite system will be sent into deep space via a spacecraft and will gather solar energy using its large solar arrays. Once collected, the energy will be converted into microwaves and transmitted down to receiving stations on Earth.
Speaking about the initiative, a NASA official explained, "Harvesting solar energy in space is far more efficient than on the ground. There's no atmospheric interference, and the sun shines constantly. If this technology becomes economically viable, sending energy from space to Earth could become a reality within our lifetime."
This project not only represents a major leap in renewable energy but also highlights the potential of space exploration to benefit life on Earth. As NASA continues to push the boundaries of science and technology, the dream of space-based solar power may soon become a practical solution for global energy needs.
