Effect of mixing of feed ingredients and injection on particle hardness

Mixing raw materials plays a crucial role in achieving a more uniform distribution of particle sizes, which helps ensure consistent hardness across the final product. The addition of water during the mixing process remains a key area for further research and optimization. In the production of hard pellet feed, introducing 1% to 2% moisture into the mixer can enhance both the stability and hardness of the pellets. However, increased moisture content can negatively impact the drying and cooling stages, as well as the long-term storage of the finished product. On the other hand, when producing wet pellets, up to 20% to 30% moisture can be added to the powder, with about 10% introduced during the mixing phase, which is easier to manage during the quenching and tempering steps. These high-moisture particles tend to have lower hardness, are softer, and offer better palatability. In addition, adding fat during the mixing stage is a common practice in feed manufacturing. Incorporating 1% to 2% oil can reduce the hardness of the particles, while increasing the oil content to 3% to 4% can significantly decrease their firmness, making them more suitable for certain animal diets.

The new corn harvested in autumn often has a higher moisture content and is not fully dry, which means it absorbs less water during processing. This can make it more challenging to achieve the desired hardness in the final pellets. Therefore, adjustments in the formulation or processing parameters may be necessary to compensate for the natural moisture levels in the raw material. Understanding the moisture characteristics of incoming ingredients is essential for maintaining product quality and consistency throughout the production cycle. By carefully managing the water and oil content during mixing, manufacturers can optimize the physical properties of the pellets to meet specific nutritional and functional requirements.
