High-temperature magnetic data plays a crucial role in the development of advanced weapons and equipment. It is essential for building new power systems, including high-energy integrated power supplies, main propulsion starters, and non-contact magnetic bearings. Currently, the operating temperature of integrated power supplies is limited to around 300°C, but the second-generation electric space shuttle (MEAII) aimed to operate at 500–600°C by 2005.
The University of Texas Austin Electromechanical (UT-CEM) has been working on a flywheel communication generator for pulse power supply systems used in weapon systems for new hybrid-electric combat vehicles. This system is also applied in propulsion and full active electromagnetic suspension systems. Induction traction motor power supplies can store up to 25 MJ at 20,000 rpm, with intermittent operation requiring peak power of 5 MW and continuous power of up to 350 kW.
High-speed starter operations push the temperature of the magnetic data above 400°C, with the ability to withstand up to 825 MPa stress. However, core loss and air pump loss affect the rotor’s actual operating temperature due to thermal effects from the spinning rotor. High stress and temperature can lead to creep and deformation of electromechanical components.
To address these challenges, the electric system requires high-speed starter/generator units that can operate under high stress, high temperature, and air-cooled conditions. The use of advanced magnetic bearings ensures smooth and collision-free operation of the launcher.
The U.S. military, NASA, and aviation industries are highly interested in magnetic bearings, especially those suitable for high-temperature environments. They plan to use them as components in future gas turbine starters, integrated power supplies, and large main propulsion generators, all supported by magnetic force to eliminate friction and wear.
Permanent magnet bearings offer advantages over soft magnetic materials, but today's permanent magnet data operate at much lower temperatures than soft magnetic materials. For example, large turbine fan starters require radial bearings that can operate above 550°C, while energy storage systems may function at extreme temperatures.
In addition, flying control electromechanical systems and secondary power supplies also need high-temperature magnetic bearings to optimize flight performance. The U.S. military is actively developing high-energy weapons, aiming to replace traditional ordnance by 2030. These weapons, whether land-based, sea-based, or airborne, require high power and lightweight solutions.
With the growing demand for power, self-starting capabilities, high-speed magnetic bearing operations, and air-cooled electromechanical components, high-temperature magnetic data becomes increasingly important. As military and civilian electrical and mechanical systems continue to evolve, improving overall performance and power system efficiency remains a key goal.
Developing power generation, distribution, and systems capable of operating at higher speeds and temperatures represents a significant trend in the industry. The new series of magnetic data is essential for achieving advanced applications.
