Make full use of light and heat to regulate cotton growth

At present, cotton is entering the flowering stage. In Bailian Village, Danggang Town, Xiaonan District, Xiaogan City, Hubei Province, the Linfuqing variety of cotton has developed 6 to 7 fruit branches. Its growth trend is promising, but some farmers still have cotton that hasn’t shown buds yet. There is a noticeable time difference of about 25 to 30 days between early and late cotton plants. Why is there such a big gap in the development of cotton? From an early growth perspective, one key reason is that the early cotton is mostly planted on spring-flower land without other crops, allowing for better management. Additionally, these seedlings are transplanted earlier, and their care is more meticulous. The use of plastic mulch also contributes to better growth. Lastly, timely fertilization and good drainage help improve the condition of the cotton plants. On the other hand, delayed cotton often faces challenges. Many fields are previously used for wheat or rapeseed, which means the cotton is transplanted later, leading to a longer seedling period. Some fields lack proper fertilization, causing weak seedlings and root damage. Excessive rain can lead to waterlogging, affecting the germination of seeds. Additionally, misuse of herbicides may harm young cotton plants by killing both weeds and the crop itself. If early-developing cotton cannot keep up with the growth cycle, it can lead to premature aging. Delayed cotton, on the other hand, struggles to balance its growth stages. Both issues can significantly reduce yield. These problems have been observed frequently over the years, and if not addressed properly, they can result in lower productivity. Therefore, current cotton management should focus on two key strategies. First, accurately assess the condition of the seedlings and build confidence in achieving high yields. Currently, over 10% of cotton plants have already started flowering, while about 20 to 30% are still at the bud stage. Most plants are entering the bud phase. Cotton has strong adaptability and compensatory abilities, meaning there is still a long window for growth. With proper ecological improvements and faster nutrient transformation, it's possible to achieve balanced growth and higher production. Second, manage fertilizer and irrigation scientifically to promote uniform growth. From June to September, there is ample sunlight and heat. During this time, it's important to make full use of these conditions, apply fertilizers wisely, and enhance photosynthesis. For cotton that has already bloomed, applying over 15 kg of multi-component fertilizer per acre is recommended. For those in the bud stage, stable application of organic fertilizer—such as 1500 kg of composted manure or 50 kg of bio-organic compound fertilizer per mu—is essential. Adding 15 kg of potassium fertilizer and spraying boron outside the roots can also help. Fertilizing three times helps prevent flower drop. Deep plowing, hill cultivation, root protection, and ensuring good drainage are also crucial. From late June to early July, which is the peak growth period, using plant growth regulators like ketamine or auxin can help control plant shape. Applying 2 to 3 grams of ketamine or 8 to 12 milliliters of auxin per acre, mixed with 30 kg of water, can be effective. For late-developing cotton, adding nitrogen fertilizer and using growth accelerators like "802" or Tianfengsu can help speed up development. By implementing these measures, farmers can address the issue of uneven growth and work towards a more balanced and productive harvest.
