Temperature and humidity management of grape germination

First, the temperature management work

In order to ensure proper grape sprouting and germination, it is essential to maintain a minimum temperature of 10°C. The effective accumulated temperature required for this process ranges between 450°C and 500°C. In unheated solar greenhouses, the warming and germination process typically begins in mid-January. After approximately 30 days of gradual warming, the grapevines start to sprout. It's important not to cover the plants with curtains, as this could interfere with the natural temperature changes needed for healthy growth.

During the temperature rise and germination phase, it's crucial to avoid rapid or excessive temperature increases. If the temperature rises too quickly, it may cause premature sprouting, which can lead to an imbalance between the above-ground and root systems. This imbalance might result in uneven germination and poorly developed fruit clusters. To prevent this, during the first week of warming, the daytime temperature should be kept between 15°C and 20°C, while nighttime temperatures should remain around 6°C to 10°C. By the second week, the daytime temperature can be increased to 15°C to 20°C, with night temperatures rising to 10°C to 15°C. In the third week, the temperature should gradually increase to 20°C to 25°C during the day, with night temperatures maintained at 13°C to 15°C until full germination occurs.

Second, the management of humidity

During the germination period, protected grape cultivation requires high levels of moisture. Insufficient water supply can delay germination, reduce the germination rate, or even cause failure. Once germination begins, it's recommended to water the plants several times, providing about 30 mm of water each time. This should be done two to three times, and the greenhouse vents should be closed to maintain a relative humidity of over 90%. As the temperature rises during the day, the humidity often drops, so using tools like a sprayer to mist the grape branches can help create a more favorable environment for early germination.

Proper temperature and humidity control are vital for successful grape cultivation. These steps not only support healthy sprouting but also contribute to the overall development of strong, productive vines. Monitoring these conditions closely and adjusting them as needed ensures the best possible outcome for your grape crop.
