Corn enters the stage of pests and diseases

In recent days, 22 forecasting technicians from the main corn-producing provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities, along with industry experts, have released their predictions on the development of pests and diseases in the mid-to-late stages of this year's corn crops. According to the forecasts, the occurrence of pests and diseases is expected to be more severe than usual this season, with insect infestations being more intense compared to last year, while disease outbreaks are anticipated to be less severe. From late July to the end of August, various pests and diseases will reach their peak, posing a significant threat to corn fields across the country. In the mid-to-late growth stages of maize, the primary threats include stalk borer, leaf-feeding insects, sap-sucking pests, and leaf diseases. Among these, the third generation of armyworms presents a high risk of recurrence, while corn borers, as well as large and small spot diseases, are expected to cause widespread damage. Other pests such as cotton bollworms, leafhoppers, aphids, double-spotted leaf beetles, and fungal diseases like brown spot, Curvularia leaf spot, head smut, and stem rot are also reported to affect certain areas. The national forecast estimates that by late summer, approximately 9.2 million mu will be affected by pests, 6.2 million mu by diseases, and an additional 3.0 million mu by various plant diseases. In specific regions, the first generation of corn borers has already been observed in Heilongjiang, with heavy infestations in central and western areas. The second generation of corn borers has been reported in Liaoning, Hubei, Hunan, and Chongqing. Meanwhile, the third generation of armyworms has shown heavy activity in the northeast and northern China. Aphid infestations are expected to be more severe in Ningxia, and Ye Hao (a type of pest) has been detected in the same region. Large spot disease is prevalent in the northeastern and northern parts of the country, while brown spot disease has increased in recent years, particularly in the Huanghuai region. Gray spot disease has been observed across most of the southwest, with some occurrences reported in the northeast as well. These findings come from the Pest and Disease Forecasting Office under the National Agricultural Technology Extension Service Center, highlighting the need for continued monitoring and timely intervention to mitigate the impact of these pests and diseases on the corn harvest.
